Coordinator's Corner
As we adjust to living with the COVID19 restrictions and ensuring we all adhere to common sense and a healthy observance of an unseen virus - it is upon us to be aware that not all people in our communities look out for their fellow local members. Our crime statistics show that "villains" have a disregard for other people's property and safety.
A local builder finished his work for the week and packed and locked his tools in his tool box on his vehicle and returned home. Over the weekend a thief broke the handles and locks on the metal tool box and stole both his power tools as well as his special personal tools.
By stealing the tools, the thief has stolen the implements that the builder uses to earn a living. Stealing a person's tools of trade has always been seen as a very low act of criminal behaviour, yet some low-life thinks nothing of it, purely to satisfy their own personal wants or needs. If you become aware of tools being "available" please report it to the police, as possessing stolen goods is also a criminal offence.
Snippets of Crime in Ryde District
This month our Crime report is much larger than previous due to the availability of specific statistical information provided by the Ryde Police. We would like to thank the Police for their continued support in providing this information.
Please ensure that you remain vigilant and do not allow you or your property to become a statistic as a crime incident on our patch. Lock Up Look Out and report incidents. Don't let thieves spoil your day or your neighbours' day.
Information on how to contact the Police can be found by accessing this link.
Scams - OPTUS Overpayment
There are scammers out there trying new schemes every day. The overpayment and "relative leaving money" to you as the "selected relative" are just scams to get people to access their financial institution or follow a "link" so that the scammer can fleece money out of the victim.
Never press any links or provide financial details to anyone that you do not know or have a legitimate business with. Your bank or business does not need to know or verify your details over the phone or online.
NEVER verify passwords or agree to sharing any "codes" that are generated by a third person to another entity. THINK TWICE - ACT ONCE. And then just DON'T give access to your financial institution. If you are compromised, then call your Financial Institution IMMEDIATELY, do not delay, it could be very costly if you do delay. Reduce your risks.
IGNORE THE SCAMMER.
Vehicle Theft and Theft from Vehicles
By leaving valuables, tools, electronics, cash and bags in sight in your vehicle you are advertising to thieves that they are available and that you do not really care about those items. Oh! you do? In that case - hide them, lock them out of sight or take them away with you.
ALWAYS LOCK YOUR VEHICLE. Turn the key or press the button and check that the doors are locked - even if the car is in the driveway.
Ryde NHW Website Now Active
NHW Ryde now has a website to further engage with our community. Over time we will provide crime prevention materials/information as well as advertise our up-coming events and meetings. The newsletters that are distributed to residents will be available as will the contact information of all of our area co-ordinators.
We would like to thank the City of Ryde council for providing assistance via their community grants programme as well as Snap Eastwood for the design and development of the website. Our secretary Mark Homeming project-managed the website build.
We believe that the website will be a great conduit as a professional media connection with our community - www.nhwryde.com.au.
East Ryde - Residents Getting Involved
Local residents in East Ryde have taken the initiative to get involved in NHW to help their local community in answer to the numerous vehicle break & enters in recent months.
A recent meeting at the Fox & Bird café, local residents and NHW Ryde members nutted out a strategy to tackle the crime rate and take on spreading the Crime prevention and safety awareness messages to the local residents. A resident has stepped up and taken on the role as NHW Area Coordinator and is seeking both local residents and a local business partner to have ~1000 NHW newlsetters printed and distributed throughout the East Ryde area.
If you are able to assist in the East Ryde Area - please contact us using our Contact Form (link).
